black pen

the other essential for starting a bullet journal is some form of writing utensil: I like to use ultra fine black gel pens from Pilot. these are my all time favorite pens to use for bullet journaling, as I can use them for both writing and illustrating.

dotted notebook

the first thing you need in order to start a bullet journal is a blank dotted notebook (it can be lined, grid, or entirely blank, but dotted pages work best for measurements). for your first bullet journal, I would recommend using journals with not too many pages - this way, there won't be as much pressure to make it perfect. I got the journal in the picture above off amazon - in my opinion, this is a great starting journal, as it isn't too expensive, doesn't have too many pages, and has high quality 120gsm paper.

colored markers

the colored markers are entirely optional if you intend to only use your bullet journal for functionality - but if you do plan to decorate and doodle in your journal, I would recommend using crayola supertips to start off. they are a less expensive alternative to other stationery brands, and they still work well and and come in a wide variety of colors.
